What kind of activities can I do?
Fantastic things!

Victor Hugo discribed Bacharach in the 19. century as one of the most beautiful towns of the world.

Because of the well situated location at the Rhine River, Bacharach was the most important trade and trans-shipment centre for wine and wood at the Middlerhine.

The town still enchanted with a lot of half timbered houses, especially the Old Posthof with his magnificent inner courtyard and the Old House built in 1568.

The city walls of Bacharach (built in the 14. century) and Oberwesel are the most preserved walls at the Middlerhine.

Wernerchapelle::
The building - started in 1290 - is a major work of Rhinish Gothic style and is located on a slope in a vineyard.
The “Wernerkapelle” has strongly been damaged due to the blasting of the castle “Stahleck” and a later landslide. Since 1787 it is only a ruin of the building with no vault and roofs. However, its filigree net of shiningly red sandstone is an unforgettable dream formation.

Castle “Stahleck"
was already documented in the year 1095.
It became residence of the counts “Pfalzgrafen am Rhein” in 1142. In 1194 the castle was the scene of a "peace marriage" between the enemies “Staufer” and “Welfen”. A short time later the castle was owned by the “Wittelsbacher”. In 1689 this great building was burned down and was rebuilt in the years 1925/27 on its foundations as a youth hostel.Footpath from Bacharach: 25 minutes; visit only possible upon time arrangement.

Church St.Peter:
The protestantic church is a romanesque basilica with galeries and windows that have been enlarged in late-gothic style.

Possibilities for excursions out of Bacharach:

By ship:

You have the possibility to do lovely excursions on the Rhine with different kinds of passenger ships: You could e. g. take one of the numerous passenger boats and go down the river from Bacharach to Boppard along the castle "Pfalzgrafenstein", Oberwesel and the legendary rock of the Loreley.

There you can leave the boat and visit the sights of Boppard like the city wall which is supposed to be in the best condition of all Roman city walls in Germany. Another 11 of 28 round towers of the city wall, which were once set up by the Romans are still left. Another big eye-catcher of Boppard is church “Sankt Severus” whose twin-towers tower highly above the town. After a nice walk through the worthwhile old town of Boppard you go back on board of a ship and start the journey back to Bacharach.
You have also got the opportunity to go upstream from Bacharach to Assmanshausen or Rüdesheim by ship.

From Assmanshausen you have the possibility to take a chairlift and go up to the famous monument "Niederwalddenkmal"in Rüdesheim. The figure of the monument already measures 10.55 meters high and stands on a pedestal that is 25 meters high. From the monument "Niederwalddenkmal" you have the possibility to either take the chairlift back to Assmannshausen or to Rüdesheim on the Rhine where you can visit the famous "Drosselgasse" or go on board of a ship and return back to Bacharach.

Loreley

By car:

You drive along the rhine river (B9)in the direction of Koblenz .You can go sightseeing in beautiful towns like Oberwesel, St.Goar or Boppard as well many castles and views, e.g. the "Vierseenblick", the "Siebenjungfrauenblick" or the "Loreleyblick".
You can also use one of the ferries to get to the other rhineside. There you can visit the castles and sightseeings.

Castles:

The beautiful castles and fortresses belongs to the distinctive feature of the middlerhine. This castle density is unique in the world. (here the castle Sooneck in Niederheimbach)

In the thirty-year-old war 1618-48 or in other later wars, many castles were damaged. At the beginning of the 19th century the castles has been rebuilt totally or partly.

The "Pfalzgrafenstein" near Kaub was build on a rockisland in the rhine river.

The "Mäuseturm" near Bingen.

Hiking:

Short distance walks or several days lasting tours for visitors with low condition or with many experience - the footpathes can be used by everyone.
The most wonderful views you can get on a walking tour along the "Rheinsteig" (from Lorch to St. Goarshausen) or along the "Rheinhöhenweg" (from Bacharach to St.Goar).
The footpathes are through vinyards above the Rhine river where you've got breath-taking views in the middlerhinevalley.

wine-growing:
Many wine-growers in Bacharach and Steeg produce wine, which is famous all over the world. The mainly wine they produce is "Riesling", because of the slate, which is suitable for the growing of "Riesling".
